Zohran Mamdani, the pro-communist New York City mayoral candidate who recently clinched the Democratic Party nomination, is attempting to walk back one of his most radical policy platforms after a recent Manhattan shooting.

Earlier this week, a gunman barged into a Manhattan office building and killed four New Yorkers, including a Blackstone executive and an NYPD officer. The gunman was allegedly looking for an NFL executive and got off the elevator on the wrong floor when he carried out the killings.

In the wake of the shooting, Mamdani has been under fire due to his past support for “defunding” the police. “In the last budget, the City Council tried to make the NYPD reduce its overtime budget by half. They simply refused. There is no negotiating with an institution this wicked & corrupt,” Mamdani posted on December 7, 2020.

“Defund it. Dismantle it. End the cycle of violence,” the post continued, which was one of many he shared on the topic in 2020. “Our police: threatening the physical safety of politicians who oppose their agenda. Our prosecutors: turning their own offices into super-spreader events because of all their COVID truthers. The entire carceral system is an unreformable public health hazard. Defund & dismantle,” the pro-communist candidate wrote in another.

On Wednesday, Mamdani emerged for a highly anticipated press conference in which he attempted to walk back his past statements in support of the radical policy.“I am not running to defund the police,” he said.

He did, however, state that he is still planning to disband the police department’s Strategic Response Group (SRG), the elite NYPD unit that responded to the massacre. “There is a need to ensure that every act we take is one that is actually delivering public safety,” he said. “And what we see right now, especially with regards to how we respond to protests, is not in line.”

"They welcomed me into their home. They refused to let me leave until I had breakfast with them," he said, adding, "They are an embodiment of so much of what makes this city the one that we love."

The Post also photographed him hugging one of the deceased officer’s family members as he left.

Two quick questions:  First, did the "slain officer" die wearing an NYPD uniform or a building security uniform?  And, second, was "Didarul Islam" his real name??

The police officer killed in Monday’s mass shooting, Didarul Islam, was in his NYPD uniform at the time of the shooting — but not on duty.

Instead, he was working a privately paid security job at 345 Park Avenue under a program that’s been in place for more than two decades, but has gotten little public attention.

“Companies will hire us to be in a lobby, to be a added layer of security, in uniform,” John Chell, the NYPD’s chief of department, said in an interview Tuesday night on "Inside City Hall."

The program, known as paid detail, was created under Police Commissioner Howard Safir in 1998, giving officers a way to moonlight in their official capacity. The NYPD controls the program: vetting companies, assigning officers and coordinating payment, while taking a 10% administrative fee.

Paid detail can mean working security anywhere from major retail chains to New York Yankee games to corporate office buildings like 345 Park Avenue.

“These officers under this program are an extension of our private security systems. They’re being privately paid,” Kathryn Wylde, president and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, a business coalition, said.

He was definitely trying to back peddle in his comments yesterday.

But I have to wonder if he'd have expressed the same sentiments and spoke so eloquently if the officers last name had been Goldstein or O'Leary?

Convenient: Zohran Mamdani now stands with police

“Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.”

That’s an all too familiar saying, especially with those who supported the “defund the police” campaign several years ago and now suddenly “see the light” when it comes to taking care of officers.

Remember when President Joe Biden did that?  He noted that he was a firm believer in the campaign following the death of George Floyd.  Then, lo and behold, he talked about how the police should be funded.  But then, surprise!  He didn’t follow through on any of that, and now here we sit, with many officers left hanging without the gear or mental health support needed to get them through their work.

Well, now we have another case surrounding Zohran Mamdani, who stands as the Democrats’ mayoral candidate for New York once the race begins later this year.  He was recently in Uganda getting married when a deadly shooting in Manhattan took place, resulting in the death of four — including a New York police officer who was on duty.

Upon his return, Mamdani was quick to pass along his condolences to the families of the victims, including the officer.  However, many were equally expedient in calling out Mamdani for comments he made in the past, surrounding his belief in the “defund the police” movement.

I talked with an NYPD officer about the prospect of Mamdani becoming mayor today. I think NYC will see a historic police shortage if Mamdani wins.

He said I could share this:

"We’ll all f**kin leave. I’ve talked to a lot of guys and we know he’s gonna hang us out to dry the first chance he gets. It’s bad enough now but it’s gonna be open season on us because the worst of the worst know they can get away with it if he’s mayor. Looting, assaults, murder, it’s all gonna get worse. Why stay when we can get jobs in safer places where we don’t have to worry about the mayor stabbing us in the back with his woke bullshit?"

Not exactly a ringing endorsement!
