Thieves cut through padlocks and latches to filch 12,000 rounds of ammunition from a decommissioned military base in southwest Washington now used as a shooting range by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, deputies said Monday.

The rounds of 9 mm and rifle ammo were discovered stolen from a storage shed at Camp Bonneville on Jan. 15 — about two weeks since deputies had last visited the remote training facility, said Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Skidmore.

The burglary was first reported Friday by The Columbian.

Both sheriff’s deputies and the Portland FBI office have leased access to the camp, which served as an Army rifle range and operations center until it closed in 1995.

The FBI owned the ammo. A spokesperson declined to comment, citing an open investigation.

Skidmore said the thieves also took several staple guns and target sheets that were owned by the sheriff’s office, but nothing more.

Investigators have no suspects, he said.
