The Achilles' Heel of the West
 
Achilles was invincible, so the story goes. He was strong and lightning fast, and in every battle he was undefeatable. But when he was shot with an arrow through the back of his heel, he was momentarily disabled, and that gave his enemies enough time to finish him off.

The West seems invincible too. We have superior technology and war-making know-how. We seem undefeatable. But we have a weakness. It is known in North America as "white guilt." In Europe it's called "post-colonial guilt."

But this guilt is founded on a mistake we should all easily see. The mistake is a simple overgeneralization (the enemy of us all). If we looked at it from another angle, most of us could clearly recognize the error.

I'm perfectly fine living within the American Empire, with European imperialist roots, founded by white male Protestant merchants and farmers.

You don't see the Chi-coms loosing sleep over their annexation of Tibet.

The Russians aren't drowning in tears for all the nations they've conquered and the peoples they've ethnically cleansed.

Are the British of Anglo-Saxon-Norman descent supposed to give England back to the Britons or the Bretons?

We are where we are because, at some time in the past, our ancestors conquered someone else's ancestors.

If the rich white limousine liberal guilt is too much to bear, give Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard back to the Native American tribes that conquered them from other Native American tribes.  Nobody is making you keep the fortunes that your great great great grandpappies made from colonization and the slave trade.

You did not have that legacy admission to Harvard because you were favored by God, you have it because your ancestors made a $h!tload via conquest, ethnic cleansing, and slavery; but, were nice enough to donate some to that institution in their own name, as a sign to others of God's favor for themselves.

The writer gets it wrong.
If The West has an Achille's Heel, it is the belief that all men are created equal.

Stubbornly clinging to that platitude will destroy us in the end.
Or, more correctly, our inability to let it go will enable our enemies to overwhelm and destroy us.

If The West has an Achille's Heel, it is the belief that all men are created equal.

Or, more correctly, our inability to let it go will enable our enemies to overwhelm and destroy us.
It depends on how you interpret that.

All men are equal in the eyes of God.

That maintains fundamental rights for all.

But as is self-evident, not all are equal in ability, skill, mental acuity, nor wisdom, only in the right to pursue, within legal constraints, the best life they can make for themselves and their progeny, unmolested by tyranny.

Many of those qualifiers have been lost in the rampant misinterpretation of those words, and the conflation of equality and equity has continued and intensified that muddle. 

In the sense of raw potential in any given field or pursuit, no, we are not all created equal, but that was not what the Founders were referring to.
