Trump megabill on thin ice ahead of key vote
by Emily Brooks and Mychael Schnell - 05/15/25 3:12 PM ET

The Republican package full of President Trump’s legislative priorities is on thin ice as hard-liners threaten to block the legislation when it arrives at the House Budget Committee on Friday morning.

Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) both said they plan to vote against advancing the GOP’s megabill in its latest form when it comes up for a key vote in the Budget Committee, enough to stop it from moving forward.

Twenty-one Republicans and 16 Democrats sit on the Budget Committee, which is where the 11 components of the party’s “big, beautiful bill” will be merged into one package. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), however, is expected to miss the vote because he is at home for the birth of his first son, meaning opposition from Roy and Norman is enough to block the measure if all Democrats are present.

On committee votes — similar to floor votes — a tie fails.

“We shouldn’t have the vote” on Friday, Norman said.

Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) is undecided on the key committee vote, he told The Hill.

Other hard-line members of the House Freedom Caucus sit on the committee, including Reps. Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.), Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) and Ben Cline (R-Va.).

Cline and Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) declined to say how they would vote.

“As a member of the House Budget Committee, I share @RepChipRoy’s concerns. Further, after a meeting with the CBO this morning, it’s clear we don’t know the true cost of this bill or whether it adheres to the Budget blueprint,” Brecheen posted on the social platform X, referring to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

“We have a duty to know the true cost of this legislation before advancing it. If we are to operate in truth, we must have true numbers—even if that means taking some more time to obtain that truth.”

The scheduled markup comes as House Republicans are negotiating changes to the underlying legislation ahead of a planned floor vote next week — namely a proposed increase to the state and local tax deduction cap in exchange for changing other aspects of the bill like Medicaid reforms.

C'mon.  Social Security Recipients are awash in riches.

The kleptocratic billionaire oligarchs are barely getting by.

Hedge funds cannot afford to pay taxes on carried interest, unlike those filthy rich Social Security, Medicare, and Veteran Disability recipients.

It's time for the destitute pay their fair share so the kleptocratic billionaire oligarchs don't have to.

One must assume Trump is in the know about Social Security.  I am sure he has been told ten times.

And if the Republicans are pushing no taxes on Social Security, you can count on the Democommies opposing the separate bill, and they will explain it is because of something else that is buried in the bill.  They lie with relish.

And Trump's one big bill is a fool's errand.  The bigger the bill, the more difficult it is to get passed in Congress.  What does Trump think he is, a Democommie?  Republicans are notorious for not getting anything done.  He should know better.

Trump is clueless on the concept of KISS!  Clueless.

No tax on Social Security benefits, or $4,000 senior ‘bonus’: How they compare
Published Fri, May 16 20255:15 AM EDTUpdated 2 Hours Ago

Lorie Konish

Key Points

House Republicans’ “one, big, beautiful” tax bill includes a new perk for older adults: a $4,000 deduction, framed as a “bonus.”
The deduction would be available to individuals ages 65 and over who meet certain income and other requirements.
The proposal provides some financial relief for seniors that was promised on the presidential campaign trail without the high costs of eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits, experts say.

House Republicans’ “one, big, beautiful” tax bill includes a new temporary $4,000 deduction for older adults.

The change, called a “bonus” in the legislation, is aimed at helping retirees keep more money in their pockets and provides an alternative to the idea of eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits, which President Donald Trump and other lawmakers have touted.

The bill provides a “historic tax break” to seniors receiving Social Security, “fulfilling President Trump’s campaign promise to deliver much-needed tax relief to our seniors,” White House Assistant Press Secretary Elizabeth Huston said via email.

The proposal calls for an additional $4,000 deduction to be available to adults ages 65 and over, whether they take the standard deduction or itemize their returns. The temporary provision would apply to tax years 2025 through 2028. The deduction would start to phase out for single filers with more than $75,000 in modified adjusted gross income, and for married couples who file jointly with more than $150,000.

You call them pig-headed, I call them useless, lazy-ass wastes of oxygen.  Instead of joining with a popular president to fulfill a promise made to and needed by a large constituency across the political spectrum, these a-holes again choose to wrap themselves in a white flag instead of joining together and actually fighting to an attainable victory.  May these toxic interlopers choke on their obstruction during the primaries.

GOP Lawmakers Betray Trump, Kill ‘Big, Beautiful’ Tax Cut Bill

Published 1 second ago

on May 16, 2025

By Mark Steffen

A handful of fiscally conservative Republicans broke with President Donald Trump mid-Friday, voting against committee passage of a budget packed with tax cuts for most Americans because it is not sufficiently paid for.

A U.S. House Budget Committee vote saw Republican Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Josh Brecheen (R-OK), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Ralph Norman (R-SC), and Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) join with all Democrats in voting 21-16 against the tax cut bill. The vote stalls, for now, Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) attempt to bring the legislation to the floor of the chamber for a full vote as soon as next week.

The hardline lawmakers defended their decision to oppose the bill, warning it adds too much to the nation’s $36 trillion national debt without offsetting the four-year tax breaks with corresponding cuts to government services. A GOP-led proposal for trimming hundreds of millions of dollars from Medicaid has still fallen well short of the billions it will cost in the long term, according to budget analysts.

However, the holdouts have said they are willing to remain in Washington, D.C., all weekend to continue negotiations, a sign that they believe progress may still be made.

Committee Chair Jodey Arrington (R-TX) said following the vote that he does not believe any further action will occur Friday.

Republicans MUST UNITE behind, “THE ONE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL!” Not only does it cut Taxes for ALL Americans, but it will kick millions of Illegal Aliens off of Medicaid to PROTECT it for those who are the ones in real need. The Country will suffer greatly without this Legislation, with their Taxes going up 65%. It will be blamed on the Democrats, but that doesn’t help our Voters. We don’t need “GRANDSTANDERS” in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE! It is time to fix the MESS that Biden and the Democrats gave us. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

UPDATE:

Where's “No Tax on Social Security?

I found out.

Congress CAN NOT alter Social Security through budget reconciliation (the Big Beautiful Bill) because of The Byrd Rule.

It simply isn't allowed.

The Byrd Rule in the Senate prohibits provisions in budget reconciliation bills (which require only a simple majority to pass) from directly altering Social Security. This rule classifies changes to Social Security, such as eliminating taxes on benefits, as "extraneous" to budgetary reform unless they are incidental to the budget process.

To eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits, Congress would need to pass a standalone bill, which requires 60 Senate votes to overcome a potential filibuster. With a closely divided Senate, securing bipartisan support for such a measure is difficult, especially if Democrats oppose it due to fiscal concerns.

@TruthSeekingRed

It is because of the Byrd rule in the Senate. any changes in Social Security would require a 2/3rds majority vote (60 votes in the Senate). If they place the No taxes on SS into the bill, the entire bill would fail.
They will have to do it in a separate bill and force the Dems to either vote against it and hurt Senior Citizens or vote for it and help them. The Dems can't afford to lose the Senior Citizen vote.

The Byrd Rule did not stop the Democrats from raising the threshold on taxable Social Security to 85% in 1993 through reconciliation.  And they did so without a single Republican vote.

I haven't heard one Congressman explain in detail why the "No Tax On Social Security" magically changed to a mere $4,000 deduction.  I understand the Byrd Rule.  But this provision was just slipped in there with no explanation.  It just appeared.  And remember, President Trump and all Republican candidates campaigned on "No Tax On Social Security", not a deduction

The GOP billionaire, pirate equity, vulture capital, kleptocratic, oligarch megadonors believe those receiving Social Security and Veterans Disability are deadbeats.

Theese lollygaggers are stealing siliver spoons from the mouths of those who want to put school-age children to work hosing down meatpacking plants, after hours, on school nights.

America needs more child labor, and fewer deadbeats, to remain cost competitive with 2nd and 3rd $h!thole countries they outsorce manufacturing to.

When BlackRock prospers, a few rich Americans prosper more.

I haven't read the details and don't intend to unless it passes. But...does the $4000 deduction apply to all taxable income or just SS?

In my mind, if it's just SS...we are getting the short end of the stick considering what was promised. As usual.

Decade after Tea Party movement, conservatives still unable to meaningfully cut debt

“The US credit rating being downgraded is evidence of how our fiscal house is out of order,” Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., a member of the House Committee on the Budget said Monday.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
