During an appearance on “Real Time” with Bill Maher Friday, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) revealed that his luggage was stolen in San Francisco about two years ago. The far-left Democrat then attempted to downplay the party’s soft-on-crime policies despite being an ardent supporter of them for years.
The freshman senator acknowledged recent polling showing widespread concerns with Democratic Party leadership in California ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, when the state will elect a new governor. One troubling poll found that nearly 50 percent of California voters would consider voting for a Republican candidate, with cost of living and crime listed as top concerns.
“So we’re going to have to change how we do business in California. We’re going to have to address people’s legitimate concerns about crime,” Schiff — a longtime supporter of “bail reform” policies — told Maher.
“I was in South San Francisco two years ago after I had an experience in the city that all too many people had when my luggage was stolen out of my car. They tell you don’t ever leave your luggage in the car. I never do until the one time I did. And of course it got stolen,” the senator then revealed.
Organized theft has become a widespread issue in many California communities due to a controversial law that lowers penalties for theft of items worth less than $950. While state leaders have attempted to introduce new laws to combat organized theft rings in recent years, petty crime and shoplifting has become commonplace in cities like San Francisco.
Car theft has become a particular concern in San Francisco, which surged by 42 percent since 2018 and peaked in 2023. Break-ins declined slightly in 2025, though petty crime remains high.
