In early 2023, Biden administration officials allegedly held private discussions with Chinese counterparts regarding a surveillance balloon that entered U.S. airspace. The balloon was identified on January 28 and was shot down by an Air Force jet off the South Carolina coast on February 4. A Pentagon statement later confirmed the high-altitude surveillance balloon violated U.S. sovereignty.
