U.S. military make huge move as part of Greenland strategy

The U.S. Department of Defense has made a decisive move by removing Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of the Pituffik military base in Greenland. The dismissal follows a series of diplomatic tensions sparked by comments made by Vice President J.D. Vance, which caused friction not only between Washington and Copenhagen but also within the U.S. military ranks.
 
Why Colonel Meyers was removed
The controversy erupted when Vice President Vance, during an official visit to Greenland, suggested that the United States should consider incorporating the island as part of its territory. His statement triggered immediate backlash from both Danish officials and many Greenlandic political figures, who viewed it as a violation of their autonomy and a veiled attempt at territorial expansion.

Amid rising unease, Colonel Meyers issued an internal message to personnel at Pituffik, voicing her disagreement with Vance’s comments. In her view, the base — which hosts a multinational team and operates under a mission of international cooperation — should not be used to further U.S. territorial ambitions in Greenland.

The message was leaked to the press and quickly interpreted as an act of defiance against the Pentagon’s leadership. After an internal review, the Department of Defense removed Meyers from her post, stating that her actions undermined the discipline and standards expected of senior officers. “Commanders are held to the highest standards of conduct, especially regarding impartiality in the performance of their duties,” read an official statement from U.S. Special Operations Command.
