A fight over proxy voting for new parents is at the heart of the issue

A normally sleepy procedural vote ended in drama for the House of Representatives after a rebellion by nine Republicans against their own party forced chamber proceedings for the week to grind to a halt.

It puts the future in question for two key bills backed by the Trump administration that were slated to get a vote on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters that votes were canceled for the rest of the week in comments condemning the mutiny.

"It's a very disappointing result on the floor there, a handful of Republicans joined with all the Democrats to take down a rule. That's rarely done. It's very unfortunate," Johnson said. "That rule being brought down means that we can't have any further action on the floor this week."

It's an embarrassing setback for House Republican leadership, who put on a full court press for both pieces of legislation.

A "rule vote" is not an expression of support or opposition for any specific measure. Rather, it's a procedural hurdle, normally falling along party lines, that allows for the House to begin debate and eventually vote on whatever bills the rule is covering.

Reps. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., Greg Steube, R-Fla., Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa., Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., Max Miller, R-Ohio, and Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., were among those who voted to kill the rule.

No, members of Congress need to be present to vote in person.

Congressional salaries should be pro-rated to the number of days or hours a year Congress is in session.

Many salaried employees' hourly equivalent pay rate is based upon a 2,000 houra per work year.  Many end up working more the 2,000 hours per work year.

If a Congress person is unavailable to represent their district/state in person, maybe the state or the voters should conduct a re-call and replacement election.

Supermarket workers, healthcare workers, and first repsonders had to show up to work in person during Covid.

If Congress persons don't need to show up to work, they are non-essential workers to be furloughed.

Dear House and Senate GOP Members:

A whole lot of Trump voters are really, really, REALLY PI$$ED that you allowed key votes on the MAGA agenda to be sidetracked today over a bunch of procedural claptrap.

Let me explain what is happening here, because you are all too deep into The Swamp to recognize it for yourselves.

On November 5, 2024, America voted for CHANGE. We voted to roll back the unconstitutional and fascistic authority of the unelected administrative state, the out-of-control judiciary and the NGO cabal that hides from Americans what their tax dollars are actually spent on.

We are all now experiencing a once in a lifetime opportunity to roll this evil back and restore America to the limited government of liberty it was founded to embrace. Let me say that again: THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY, for all of us. If you blow this, all is lost. We will all fall prey to the tyranny of the Leviathan, and we will never recover. Let me break it down further. In 2024, Americans did not vote for you and the Republican Party. Instead, we voted for Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda. If you do not deliver on that agenda, come 2028 all those MAGA voters who also voted for you merely because you happened to be on the ballot beneath Donald Trump’s name will STAY HOME. You and your party will suffer the worst mid-term defeat in US history, your party will be lost forever, and America will be lost too, never to recover.

We saw what you did to the Tea Party, and if you do that to MAGA, NOT ONE OF US WILL EVER VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN.

Are we clear? You can either cut through the BS and make American great again, or you can watch us abandon you out of spite as America circles the toilet drain.
