‘I Can Win If I Have $20 Million’: Paxton Hints At Run Against Cornyn In Highly Anticipated 2026 Primary

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton could announce a primary challenge to Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn in the coming months.

Paxton told Punchbowl News Tuesday that he is seriously considering a run to challenge Cornyn, but acknowledged he would need roughly $20 million to make the race competitive. If Paxton decides to run, the race could become one of the most expensive primaries of the 2026 cycle and could be the toughest reelection fight Cornyn has faced in his Senate career. “I think it’s just time,” Paxton told Punchbowl. “He’s had his chance. He hasn’t performed well, and the voters know it. You can go a long time without people paying attention. And they’re paying attention now.”

Paxton said his reelection announcement hinges on securing enough fundraising commitments over the next several months to mount a competitive challenge against Cornyn. “I think I can win if I have $20 million,” Paxton added.

Back channelling of what I hear is that the rank and file of conservatives and most in GOP here and utterly pissed at Cornyn.

I don't care if it is Paxton or Ronny Jackson.  One of those two has to run, and send this ass wipe packing.

But, here is what I fear will be the scenario....

Round 1- 3 Way race with Cornyn-Jackson-Paxton results in a runoff.
Round 2- Dim crossover  in runoff gives it to Cornyn again.
Round 3- Cornyn wins in November, and the RINO plague perpetuates itself.

GOP needs to coalesce behind one alternate candidate in the primary.  And I hope Trump can work something out  knowing he is close to both of them (Jackson and Paxton).  The Bushy machine still lives in Texas, and its tenacles will want to secure Cornyn there forever.

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

How old is Mr. Cornyn?

Perhaps if Mr. Paxton begins to gain some real traction, Mr. Cornyn may decide that it's time for retirement...

When Cornyn was the Texas AG he was a decent guy, but swamp fever has gotten him, and he will never get another vote from me.

Around 72 or so. Still young for a senator.
