Williams and Wilmore certainly did not expect to be on the ISS for nine month when they launched to space in June aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft on a crewed test flight. The test flight − which would have certified Starliner to ferry NASA crews to and from the ISS − was supposed to last only eight to ten days.That short test flight became extended as NASA and Boeing rushed to find answers after the spacecraft's thrusters malfunctioned upon the docking with the ISS in June. Uncertain about safely returning Williams and Wilmore onboard the Starliner, NASA reassigned the astronauts to the upcoming Crew-9 mission.NASA removed two astronauts from its Crew-9 mission to allow for Williams and Wilmore to join the cohort, and return onboard the SpaceX Dragon − which carries four people at a time. The altered Crew-9 − only Hague and Gorbunov − launched aboard the SpaceX Dragon Freedom in late September.Meanwhile, the Starliner spacecraft had landed on September 7, without Williams and Wilmore onboard.
