“GOVERNMENTS must yield national sovereignty to multilateral authorities able to enforce laws “across environmentally invisible frontiers” if the greenhouse effect, which threatens the future of whole nations, is to be overcome, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Sir Shridath Ramphal, said on Tuesday.

A Commonwealth Expert Group set up to look at climate change estimated there was a 90 per cent certainty that the planet would become warmer by at least 1-2 degrees, perhaps much more, and that sea levels would rise by between one and four metres, by the year 2030. Global warming and sea level rises would continue for decades, perhaps centuries.”

However, it takes a LONG time to melt even fractions of giant masses of ice, as in centuries, so the scaremongering that this will ever happen in our lifetimes is completely overblown.

If it was really so imminent, why would Presidents and politicians be buying waterfront property?

The Earth is warming because it's supposed to be warming - it's coming out of an ice age - it has nothing to do with the unprovable greenhouse effect.

The claim in the headline was made in 1989... Or 36 years ago with only 5 years to go from now... So the claim didn't turn out to be even remotely true in spite of the "90% certainty".

This will not happen, not even a 1 meter rise.  Long before enough of the north polar ice cap melts to produce that much of a sea level rise (and Antarctica is not melting -- odd asymmetry inexplicable in terms of greenhouse gas warming), enough of it will melt to shut down the thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic that moves heat from the tropics to higher latitudes, and the next winter reglaciation will start, the next Ice Age will be upon us, and sea levels will fall as more and more of the earth's water accumulates in ice pack covering a good deal of the Northern Hemisphere's landmass.

If the North polar ice cap melts, there will be no notable rise in sea level. It's floating on the ocean. It won't overflow any more than your glass will if the ice in it melts.

The claim is that fresh water from the melt will change the chemistry shutting down the North Atantic current flow that warms that area triggering a new glaciation period - we are already in an "ice age".

Who is "they"?  The global warming alarmists are asserting sea levels will rise 1 to 4 m, I counter-argued that before that would happen, glaciation would set in, and you are right, glaciation would lower sea levels.
