Contrary to his earlier stand on H-1B visa, United States of America’s president-elect Donald Trump recently took his side on the H-1B visa debate saying that he supports immigration visas for highly skilled workers. H-1B visa allows the entry of skilled workers from around the world to the US.
In an interview with the New York Post on Saturday, Trump said he has always liked the H-1B visa and hired workers through this program. “I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them. “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program,” Trump said to the Post. In his first administration, Trump had restricted access to foreign worker visas and was critical of the program.
Supporting the H-1B visa, entrepreneur Elon Musk on X said: “Anyone – of any race, creed or nationality – who came to America and worked like hell to contribute to this country will forever have my respect. America is the land of freedom and opportunity. Fight with every fiber of your being to keep it that way!,”
The argument began when some technocrats of Silicon Valley and supporters of the anti-immigration movement criticised Trump’s decision to select Sriram Krishnan’s as a White House policy adviser on artificial intelligence. Far-right Make America Great Again (MAGA) supporter Laura Loomer said: “We have to protect President Trump from the technocrats." Media reports quoted here saying: "Looking forward to the inevitable divorce between President Trump and Big Tech."
