‘Soviet-style’ power grid is failing Britain, warns energy boss
Story by Matt Oliver • 4h
Britain’s net zero drive risks driving up household bills unless the “Soviet”-style grid is overhauled, the boss of the country’s biggest electricity supplier has warned.
Greg Jackson, chief executive of Octopus Energy, criticised rules that encourage developers to build wind and solar farms far away from cities, despite a lack of existing infrastructure to transport the electricity they generate.
It will mean the bill for constructing new power lines will be unnecessarily high in the coming years, he said, with wind farms also due to be handed ever-bigger sums to switch off when the grid is too busy to accept their power.
Mr Jackson blamed the problems on Britain’s “mad” national pricing system, which gives the same value to electricity generated in Scotland as that generated in London despite demand being far higher for the latter.
