Rand Paul Floats Elon Musk for House Speaker: ‘Disrupt the Swamp’

Wendell Husebo 19 Dec 2024

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) floated Elon Musk on Thursday as the next speaker of the House.

Musk, President-elect Donald Trump’s chief to cut government waste, successfully placed tremendous pressure on Republican House leadership to scrap Wednesday’s spending measure in a series of X posts.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Democrats filled the continuing resolution with a large amount of pork that mirrored an omnibus bill, Breitbart News’s Bradley Jaye reported:

Johnson’s 1,547-page year-end spending deal, released Tuesday night after days of extended deadlines, fell apart in less than 24 hours as Republicans of all ideological stripes turned on the bill over its contents and Johnson’s mishandling of negotiations and the rollout.

Conservatives, moderates, loyal rank-and-file Republicans, and even a committee chairman savaged the bill for giving far too much to Democrats.

President-elect Donald Trump and soon-to-be Vice President JD Vance released a statement Thursday afternoon urging Republicans to pursue a clean continuing resolution with only an add-on addressing the debt ceiling.

Following the collapse, Paul appeared to back Musk for speaker.

“The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress,” Paul posted on X. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk . . . think about it . . . nothing’s impossible. (not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds).”

Top Republicans Float Elon Musk As Speaker Of The House

With House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on the ropes, the MAGA movement is floating a trial balloon for Elon Musk, teasing President-elect Donald Trump with the image of a fully compliant leader who won’t cut deals with Democrats.

Over the past 24 hours, Musk has been on a digital rampage against Johnson’s stopgap spending measure, one that conservatives have decried as a pork-laden appeasement effort to garner Democratic votes in the face of Republican obstructionism. “This bill should not pass,” Musk declared in a post on X Tuesday. He has since upped the ante on members of Congress, warning them to watch their right flanks if they don’t join President-elect Trump in seeking to kill the bill. For his effort, Musk should be rewarded, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) declared one day later.

“I’d be open to supporting @elonmusk for Speaker of the House,” she suggested in her own post responding to one by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). “DOGE can only truly be accomplished by reigning in Congress to enact real government efficiency. The establishment needs to be shattered just like it was yesterday. This could be the way.” Her comments came after Paul noted that the Constitution does not require the House speaker to be a member of Congress. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk . . . think about it . . . nothing’s impossible. (not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds,” he wrote.

Not sure if this is a serious idea or not. But, whether Elon or someone else, speaker Johnson will be replaced in a month.

Musk wouldn't last a week.

Musk wouldn't last a week.
He would never take the job. With all the global enterprises he has on-going, being Speaker would be a waste of his time.

Either would cause 'splodey heads on both sides of the aisle. The thought makes me chuckle.

But why would either of them want it? Or anybody, for that matter.

I agree! But we can't make them elect him.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
