EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Police in Juarez, Mexico say they rescued 10 migrants from a home where smugglers kept them under lock and key for 10 days.

The Mexican and Central American captives told police officers they had not been fed since last week and were kept under threats to have their relatives pay 30,000 pesos ($1,500) or they would be harmed, the Chihuahua state police said in a statement.

Police and members of Mexico’s National Guard went to the home on Calle Argon near the Rio Grande after one of the migrants got access to a cell phone in the house belonging to a smuggler and called 911.

The migrants were taken by authorities for a medical checkup and were fed. There was no word on any arrests.
