Biden may be about to prove just how little he cares about democracy

After President Joe Biden’s controversial pardon of his son Hunter, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries suggested the outgoing president should also “exercise the high level of compassion” with clemency for “working-class Americans” who faced aggressive prosecutions for non-violent offences.
 
It’s a near certainty that Jeffries wasn’t referring to high-ranking politicians and bureaucrats.

Biden this week issued pardons or commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people, a record in just one day. But White House officials are also said to be considering blanket pre-emptive pardons for those who vociferously opposed the 45th and soon-to-be 47th president Donald Trump, including Trump impeachment ringleader representative Adam Schiff; former representative Liz Cheney, the vice chair of the House panel investigating January 6; former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head Dr Anthony Fauci; and former Joint Chiefs chairman General Mark Milley.

Trump has had choice words for all on Truth Social, at rallies, and in interviews. So the supposed rationale is that Biden would be protecting democracy by shielding Trump’s enemies from a vengeful Trumpian Justice Department. But this is absurd.
