Race for CA-District 13 remains close
Denair Unified, Hughson council races still too close to call

The race between incumbent Rep. John Duarte (R-Modesto) and Democratic challenger Adam Gray for the 13th District congressional seat is once again going down to the wire.

As of late Tuesday night, Duarte led the former five-term Assemblymember by a mere 227 votes — 100,885 to 100,658. Two years ago, when Duarte won the seat by just 564 votes, the race for the 13th was the second-closest House race in the nation.

“We’ll keep curing ballots on both sides,” said Duarte from his residence in the nation’s capital. “This race is so close that it may end up going to a recount. We just have to stay patient until every vote is counted.”

For months, this race was labeled a toss-up by reputable polling outlets, with a few giving Gray a slight edge in the final weeks of the campaign. For a time, that appeared to be a major miscalculation with Duarte leading by more than 3,000 votes at times. But the lead has continued to dwindle and now Gray is closer than he was two years ago.

The only problem for Gray is he’s running out of daylight.

The 13th district includes all of Merced County and pieces of Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Madera and Fresno counties. While there are still ballots left to process, it’s not clear how many of those ballots are from residents of the 13th district.

Two years ago, in an off-year election, about 135,000 ballots were cast in the district. This year, more than 200,000 ballots have been accounted for.

In Stanislaus County, which is Duarte’s home turf, Gray has nearly a 3,800-vote lead — 53.3% to 46.7%. In Merced County, which is Gray’s home county, the race is a little closer — 51.3% to 48.7% — with Gray ahead by 2,000 votes. In San Joaquin County, though Gray leads by just 1,000 votes, it represents his largest percentage — 53.6 to 46.4.

Conversely, Duarte is dominating Madera County by 4,700 votes — 57% to 43% — and Fresno County by nearly 2,400 votes, with 56.2% of the vote to Gray’s 43.8.

Ever since 2022, when Duarte’s victory contributed to the Republicans’ slim House majority, the 13th has been a target by both parties, which contributed millions to bolster their candidate.

As it stands, the GOP controls 218 House seats, while the Democrats have secured 212. Five seats, including the 13th, remain undecided.

“We’ve got the lead at this point,” said Duarte. “We just have to wait until we’re sure.”

Nancy Pelosi's daughter posts bizarre video saying she was in California district to 'CURE ballots'... as Republican candidate's lead tumbles

Nancy Pelosi's daughter said she was 'curing' ballots in a California congressional district where the Republican candidate saw his lead drop by hundreds of votes in recent days.

Christine Pelosi, one of the former House speaker's four daughters, posted a video Tuesday saying she was traveling to the Golden State's 13th congressional district, where the race between Republican John Duarte and Democrat Adam Gray has tightened.

'My life, my love is curing ballots with my friends, I can't wait to get on the road the again,' the 58-year-old is heard singing to the tune of Willie Nelson's classic.

Duarte leads Gray by just 227 votes, down from nearly 2,000 on Monday.

The race could prove crucial to Republicans' ability expand their majority in the House, after already managing to flip the Senate.

Ballot 'curing' refers to the process of allowing voters the chance to fix minor errors with their mail-in ballots to avoid them being discarded.

These can include voters failing to sign their ballots or enter voter ID information.

The democrat just took the lead … three weeks after the election.  Republicans will only have 220 seats, and some of those will hinge on special elections.

What House races have yet to be called — and why they’re taking so long

.

Three weeks after Election Day, there are still three races yet to be called for the House of Representatives that could determine how much wiggle room Republicans will have to work with when they swear in their majority next year.

Of the three outstanding House races, two are in California and one is in Iowa. All three are locked in the tightest of margins, with the widest lead at just 800 votes. It could still take days or weeks for those races to be called, and although they will not shift the balance of power in the lower chamber, they could make things more difficult for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to wrangle his conference.

Despite Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ (R-IA) race remaining uncalled, the incumbent Republican declared victory late on election night and GOP leaders have celebrated her win. As of Wednesday morning, Miller-Meeks led Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan by exactly 800 votes.

Miller-Meeks is no stranger to tight races, winning her first election in 2020 by just six votes. She later increased that margin of victory to defeat Bohannan by nearly 20,000 votes in 2022.

But the results this year are taking longer to process after Bohannan requested a recount, putting election workers through the strenuous process of verifying and tabulating ballots a second time.

California is a bit more nuanced. The state has a slew of election laws that delay its results from being certified, especially when those races are already deemed too close to call.

Two races remain uncalled in the Golden State: California’s 13th Congressional District, held by Rep. John Duarte (R-CA), and the 45th Congressional District, held by Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA). Under current leads, both Republican incumbents are narrowly trailing their opponents by fewer than 615 votes.
