Turbines In Trouble: Offshore Energy Woes Threaten A Pollution-Free Future

The world’s oil companies, now even more encouraged by the victory of President-elect Trump, have adopted a “drill baby drill” business plan, green energy has become progressively a more minor part of the energy future.

In particular, while they have had some success in China and Europe, offshore wind installations have struggled, and the risks of projects are high enough that financing has become expensive.

According to Reuters, “After a year of canceled projects, broken turbines and abandoned lease sales, the global offshore wind industry no longer has much chance to hit the lofty targets set by governments in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere, marking a setback for efforts to fight climate change.”

Offshore wind turbines are fiscally inefficient means of generating power.  The cost per kwH or mwH is non-competitive with other sources of energy.

On remote islands where the only other source of power are diesel generators, installing an onshore wind turbine might be cost-competitive.

If we are to defeat inflation, we need to use the most economical sources of energy.  We should also increase the efficiencies of generation and distribution to further contribute to GDP.

We must with the mwH war to win the AI war.

We need more electricity at lower cost per mwH to drive greater technological computation efficiencies.

Inexpensive energy is one of America's greatest competitive advantages, and we should not piss it away for Al Gore's nonsense.

less expensive mwH > win mwH war > win AI war > computational competitive advantage for US business, medicine, research, and military.

ERCOT CEO: Texas is Leading the Charge for Nuclear Energy

The CEO overseeing Texas’ electrical grid says he sees great potential in nuclear energy.

Pablo Vegas joined the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) in October 2022 as President and CEO. ERCOT came under fire in February 2021 after a winter storm blasted Texas.

As temperatures dipped below zero, ERCOT implemented rolling blackouts when the power grid struggled to meet the high energy demand. For days, millions of Texans suffered through extreme weather conditions without electricity.

ERCOT pointed towards unreliable energy sources, claiming more than half of the state’s wind turbines froze during the storm and failed to supply enough power. ...

“Texas, as it often does, is leading the charge in working to create the environment where nuclear can become a core part of the future. Nuclear is a great, great power resource to develop in this country,” said Vegas, pointing towards the energy source’s duration and safety. ...

Thorium boasts several advantages over the conventional nuclear fuel, uranium-235. Thorium can generate more fissile material (uranium-233) than it consumes while fuelling a water cooled or molten salt reactor, and it generates fewer long-lived minor actinides than plutonium fuels. It is estimated that the Earth’s upper crust contains an average of 10.5 parts per million (ppm) of thorium, compared with about 3 ppm of uranium.

“Because of its abundance and its fissile material breeding capability, thorium could potentially offer a long-term solution to humanity’s energy needs,” said Kailash Agarwal, Fuel Cycle Facilities Specialist at the IAEA and one of the authors of the IAEA report.

In addition to the fact that thorium-fuelled reactors — and nuclear power in general — do not emit greenhouse gases in operation, another advantage is that they produce less long-lived nuclear waste than present-day uranium-fuelled reactors.

Advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are a key part of the Department’s goal to develop safe, clean, and affordable nuclear power options. The advanced SMRs currently under development in the United States represent a variety of sizes, technology options, capabilities, and deployment scenarios. These advanced reactors, envisioned to vary in size from tens of megawatts up to hundreds of megawatts, can be used for power generation, process heat, desalination, or other industrial uses. SMR designs may employ light water as a coolant or other non-light water coolants such as a gas, liquid metal, or molten salt.

Advanced SMRs offer many advantages, such as relatively small physical footprints, reduced capital investment, ability to be sited in locations not possible for larger nuclear plants, and provisions for incremental power additions. SMRs also offer distinct safeguards, security and nonproliferation advantages.

Unfortunately for us Texans, Vegas will have to go through Governor Abbott, the wind energy power champ, who increasingly fights to promote wind energy.

Abbott has a weakness here and we have not found out as yet why he takes this stand.  Could be profiting from this support.

Remember Abbott is the one also pushing to follow California in constructing a ridiculous bullet train from Dallas to Houston, costing the state many billions and taking away tens of thousands of acres from landowners.

Gov. Abbott unveils nuclear energy initiative aimed at strengthening Texas grid

The plan includes seven major recommendations.

On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott released a comprehensive plan to make Texas the nation's leader in "advanced nuclear power."

It comes after a year-long study looking at how nuclear technology could help keep our lights on and potentially create thousands of new jobs in Central Texas.

A new generation of nuclear reactors would work alongside our existing power sources to keep electricity flowing, especially during peak summer months when we're all running our air conditioners.

The plan includes seven major recommendations.

The first is creating a new state authority to oversee nuclear development. They'll also establish a single point of contact to help companies navigate the complex permitting process.

Education is also a big focus of the plan. It calls for partnerships with community colleges and universities to train workers for these high-tech jobs.

There's also significant investment planned in manufacturing and supply chains, with new funding programs to help companies transition into nuclear component production.

“Texas is the energy capital of the world, and we are ready to be No. 1 in advanced nuclear power,” said Gov. Abbott. “By utilizing advanced nuclear energy, Texas will enhance the reliability of the state grid and provide affordable, dispatchable power to Texans across the state. I thank Public Utility Commissioner Jimmy Glotfelty and the members of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Working Group for working tirelessly to put Texas on the path to be the global leader in advanced nuclear power. As we build an advanced nuclear industry in our great state, we will ensure Texas remains a leader in energy and strengthen the Texas grid to meet the demands of our growing state.”

The next steps will involve implementing these recommendations.
