Hochul’s congestion pricing revival approved by MTA – clearing the way for $9 tolls starting Jan. 5

Congestion pricing is back! The MTA on Monday approved a new plan to charge drivers $9 to enter Midtown Manhattan starting Jan. 5.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s congestion pricing revival got the transit agency’s green light — clearing the way for motorists entering Manhattan below 60th Street to be hit with $15 tolls by 2031.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board OK’d the governor’s phased-in congestion pricing plan in a 12-1 vote.

Congestion pricing’s return is “huge for the MTA,” said Janno Lieber, the agency’s chair. He argued that motorists, transit riders and businesses would benefit from the program reducing traffic in Manhattan.  .  .  .

From now on, only rich people will be able to afford to drive in Manhattan.  Which is exactly what rich liberals want.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

Most people will end up coming in from the northern end of Manhattan and parking above 60th, so really it’s a big win for the companies that own parking garages uptown.  From LI they’ll come across the Triboro bridge or go across to the Bronx and come across one of the other freebie bridges up there - lots and lots of new traffic congestion as all those additional cars try to fit across already congested bridges.  From NJ they’ll go up to the Geo Wash bridge and come across that way (they’ll be paying the toll for the bridge, but they’d be paying a toll anyways if they took the tunnels).

Then all of these people will crowd onto the subway uptown and take it downtown below 60th street.

So, lots of additional traffic congestion, lots of additional pollution from slow-moving cars, lots of additional subway riders, but very little additional revenue for the MTA.

Silly me, here I was floored that they raised our tolls to $2.00!!  The bridges have been paid for, for quite sometime. Sure it raises revenue I suppose but I can't help but wonder where the money goes.

$9 and $15 is a tremendous amount of revenue.

I bet good money that certain types of people will be 'exempt' from paying this toll, like

city and state employees, politicians, and cronies of the mayor and state, such as union bosses.

Another mechanism to treat ordinary people like dirt while the connected get away scot-free
