Democrats hope Thune can be ‘Paul Ryan 2.0’ with Trump sway looming

Democrats are searching for whatever silver lining may present itself fresh off the GOP securing a clean sweep of Congress and the White House.

One has materialized with Republicans’ selection of Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) as the next majority leader.

The pragmatic conservative is someone who Democrats say can keep bipartisanship alive in a Washington under one-party control. He is taking over from Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), whose institutional streak meant the two parties periodically struck deals and kept the government open.

“I think John Thune would be a good leader. I think he’s somebody who has good relationships across the aisle and obviously respected by his colleagues,” said retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), the third-ranking Senate Democrat. “We’ve worked together on the Agriculture Committee, and he’s been somebody good to work with.”

A Senate Democratic aide offered a similar assessment. “My hope is that Thune could be Paul Ryan 2.0, essentially an adult in the room,” the aide said, referring to the former Republican speaker of the House.

Plausible.....  And probable.

i've seen Thune's previous comments around Trump.  He's not going to be the happy warrior, and I anticipate obstruction when it comes down to the status quo.

I think Thune is on a short leash.  If he doesn't stay in line, I think he'll be McCarthy'd.

So enlighten me, do we have another vote in January with the new caucus for SML?

Perhaps but I wouldn't count on it.  Lots of RINO's still seated and he'll likely be another McConnell.  He's young too, which means he's likely not going anywhere.

Chuck Grassley ... his current term doesn't expire until Jan. 2029.

If not him, another Republican Senator whose term does not expire until Jan. 2029.  That would give Trump a Republican Senate Majority Leader who won't be distracted by his own re-election during Trump's term.

On the flip side, Trump might want a Senate Majority Leader whos term expires in 2027 to use the threat of being primaried as leverage.

NY financial types are big into having leverage over their subordinates.

Strom Thurmond lived to be a spry 100.  Plus, he makes Trump look younger by comparison.

Sen Thune will be an obstructionist.  You can count on it.  He will drag his feet on everything for the first two years.

Trump has 730 days to get anything done in Congress.  He should assume he will lose both houses come 2026.  Sen Thune will work hard to see that happen.  I expect him to be a complete zero!

Every RINO should be identified, routinely labeled by the RNC, and given zero dollars for any future campaigns.

If Thune and Johnson will follow Trump's lead for those 730 days the Democrats will find themselves in the wilderness for a very long time. I realize how big a word IF is.

You nailed it.  As long as Thune, Cornyn, and every other GOP leadership squish bring knives to gunfights, we are F'ed.
