Rasmussen: We Called the Trump Result, but Republicans Stalled Downticket

Joel B. Pollak 11 Nov 2024

Rasmussen Reports has emerged once again as one of the most accurate pollsters of the presidential race — but the Republican Party needs to study why it struggled to win more downticket races, pollster Mark Mitchell says.

Rasmussen’s final election poll showed that Donald Trump was ahead of Kamala Harris nationwide by 3 points. In the end, he won the popular vote by just over two points. Rasmussen’s polls also suggested that Trump was ahead slightly in all seven of the “battleground” states; Trump ended up sweeping all seven en route to victory on Nov. 5.

“I think he’s going to surprise people in the swing states by being to the right of the polls,” Mitchell said on Nov. 2.

Mitchell spoke to Breitbart News on Breitbart News Sunday on SiriusXM Patriot 125 on Sunday evening. He noted that while Trump had performed as expected, Republicans had failed to make the kinds of gains in the Senate, House, and state-level races that would have been expected given the size of Trump’s win in the national popular vote.

“The biggest surprise to me, and something I think Republicans should be asking themselves every day for the next four years, is if the entire country moved seven points to the right, as it seems like it has, why did it only move one or two points to the right in the battlegrounds? That’s the problem,” Mitchell said.

“This was a massive repudiation of Biden regime leftism, and yet [these are] still very, very meager down-ballot gains.”

Republicans won four Senate seats, but Democrats appeared to have held off challenges in Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona. In addition, Republicans won only a handful of House seats, protecting their majority but failing to expand it to a more comfortable margin. On the state level, Republicans won only about 50 legislative seats nationwide, a shift of less than one percent.

Don't know, here in NH we have success downticket, but we still went for Harris (as expected).

The Republicans need to do a post mortem on downticket races.  They can start with the obvious.  First off, Kari Lake et al. didn't have the luxury of running against Kamala Harris.  Candidate quality has been a concern for the longest time, as was the appointment of Lara Trump, who was bound to focus her attention on the presidential race.  McCormick ran a fantastic campaign, Moreno was pushed over the finish line by a tailwind in Ohio, and the others didn't have what it took.  Republicans lost a pile of House races in swing districts despite winning the popular vote nationwide.  Why did this happen again, and what adjustments will be made prior to 2026.

And Cocaine Mitch had alot to do with it while his cronies stood by.

Which is why Cornyn and Thune absolutely should not get the SML position.

You're FOS! The PROBLEM is, and has been, Mitch McConnell torpedoing EVERY conservative candidate. He FAR prefers remaining in the minority to a CONSERVATIVE senate.

Sorry, but that dog don't hunt for me. Cocaine Mitch gave Kari Lake zero dollars, which is a complete dereliction of duty. What other candidates were starved and barely lost?

This happened last election too. It's not like the Rats garner quality candidates, so something else is the issue, like maybe leadership.

No, you're FOS.  McConnel's super PAC wants to invest in strong candidates who are malleable, rather than the strongest conservative.  This is problematic for the conservative movement, but there is no evidence he prefers a Democrat majority to a conservative senate.  He dumped a lot of money into Herschel Walker's campaign (abandoned by Trump), and he also spent $32 million on JD Vance ... which represented the vast majority of his advertising in the final months.

I think they really didn't want Kamala to win, but decided to cheat in the down races to limit Trump's power.

Kari Lake was not the best candidate, as she proved last time around. However, your point is a fair one, as McConnell also denied funds to Ted Cruz, who is not only a terrific candidate, but one of the most important and valuable Republican senators.

And McConnell apparently did so out of pure spite. We need new, dependably conservative leadership to ensure that Trump's agenda is not sabotaged or slow-walked.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Mitch McConnell has torpedoed so many conservative candidates I can't remember them all.  With friends like him who needs enemies?

Super PACs are notoriously opaque, and you may be right about the spitefulness of McConnell driving the allocation of cash, but two things to consider:  a) There were candidates to fund in other states that were less prone to stunts like telling McCain Republicans to "get the hell out."  A lightning rod in the senate may cost the party other seats and generally create headaches for the mossbacks.  When Ted Cruz called McConnell a liar on the senate floor, I recall thinking how unwise that was.  b) Arizona's senate race was not regarded as competitive until late October, by which point the PAC's money was committed elsewhere.  With the benefit of hindsight, who knows where the money is spent.
