Individualism, on its face is fine. Great things can come of that and most everyone has some part to play--not all the same. But it isn't a question of parts, it's that some are metric, some SAE, some wentworth, with a crazy mixture of right and left hand threads in a spectrum of pitches.
For the parts to come together, they have to be compatible. Unifying principles in a culture, as much as 'righty tighty' and a standard scale of measurement make for parts that can be united to form something truly more than the sum of the individual bits. Otherwise, it's just a pile of incompatible junk. And no, not all parts are equal in terms of utility, durability, and strength. Using the wrong part for an application leads to failure of the whole apparatus.
