Why Do Fighter Jets Have Afterburners & How Do They Work?

Afterburners provide a short burst of increased thrust by igniting additional fuel in the hot exhaust stream of the main engine.
They are used for take-off, reaching supersonic speeds, and fast combat movement in light jets.
Despite their inefficiency and high fuel consumption, afterburners are a common feature in military and some commercial jets.
We have all heard of or seen afterburners on modern fighter jets, with their characteristic flame burn behind the engine. The design is a relatively old and straightforward one, which produces a short burst of increased thrust.
