CBS said it would not be fact-checking Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) or Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) during the vice presidential debate.
ABC News took flak over its fact-checking during the presidential debate, fact-checking former President Donald Trump several times, including on dubious grounds, while never fact-checking Vice President Kamala Harris. Following the backlash, as well as a ratings hit to host David Muir, CBS announced it would not be fact-checking the vice presidential candidates.
CBS said it would be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other and that “the moderators will facilitate those opportunities” during the time allocated for rebuttals, according to the Associated Press.
However, CBS said CBS News Confirmed, its fact-checking unit, will put out real-time fact-checks on its blog and social media and during the post-debate analysis.
The 90-minute debate will take place in New York City at 9 p.m. It will be moderated by CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan. As with the presidential debate, there will be no audience.
