Trump meets with Zelensky after all and thanks him for ending ‘impeachment hoax’

Former President Donald Trump thanked a surprised-looking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for ending the “impeachment hoax” ahead of their Friday meeting.

“[Zelensky] said, ‘President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong,'” Trump said as Zelensky stood silently by his side ahead of their New York City meeting. “He said it loud and clear, and the impeachment hoax died right there.”

The comment referred to Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, which centered on accusations that Trump pressured Zelensky to investigate his political opponent, Joe Biden, and his son Hunter Biden, in exchange for military aid from the United States to fight off Russian-backed separatists.

Zelensky spoke up at the time and said there was “no blackmail,” and Trump was acquitted in the Senate.

“I’ve never told you this, to be honest,” Trump said Friday, “but he was like a piece of steel.”

But their relationship has soured a bit since, which might account for the worried look on Zelensky’s face as Trump spoke.

Apparently it went very well behind closed doors.  Zelensky looked really nervous going in but relaxed when he came out.

A couple of observations: First, this was a win-win for Trump and Zelensky. They both benefited from the publicized meeting, standing together, addressing the press. Zelensky benefits by shoring up support from Trump and his supporters, which he'll need should Trump win in November. Trump benefits by showing that he's got leverage — and something other world leaders (including the Left's darling, Zelensky) want to be a part of. And it sends a message to Putin, too, that the dealmaker may soon be in play and there might yet be a resolution he can accept and live with.

Second, notice Zelensky's body language before and after the meeting. Before, he looked tense, anxious. After, he looked much more relaxed. Why exactly that is, it's hard to say, but my sense is that it's a good thing. We'll see.
