Specialized tanks date back to WW1's Mark I or IV, when there were cannon-armed "male" and machine-gun-armed "female" versions. It was kind of learned in WW2 that having the ideal model on the field where/when needed was less than realistic and the wonderful world of tanks evolved toward the one-size-does-most MBT.
