An unlicensed driver from Mexico who may be in the U.S. illegally is facing a slew of charges after authorities say he struck two firefighters at the scene of a crash on a highway in Indiana this weekend.
The incident unfolded at around 4 a.m. on Saturday morning in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) firefighters were called to the scene of a wreck on I-65 and while wrapping up their duties, a driver plowed through the accident scene in a Nissan Altima.
“IFD Ladder 30 was in the far right lane, positioned at an angle to block on-coming traffic. They were assisting the occupants of a car that landed in the grass just off the interstate,” IFD explained in a statement.
“IFD Engine 30 was assisting the occupants of the 2nd vehicle a few hundred feet south of Ladder 30. Both apparatus had emergency lights activated. Firefighters say the driver came through the scene – between the Ladder and the car in the grass – speeding along the gravel berm.“
Two firefighters were struck by the Altima.
