Called the Alfa class by Nato, they were in commission 20-25 years (1971-1996). They were nuclear powered and carried torpedoes and/or mines. Their armament was roughly similar to late 1950s USN Skipjack class boats.

Other than 10 boats decommissioned by Clinton after ~18 years' service and a few more by GWB after a bit over 20 years' service, most Los Angeles class attack submarines served well over 30 years (a couple for 40), with 24 in service, approaching 40 years of service. The Los Angeles class were nearly triple the displacement of the Alfas and carry cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles as well as torpedoes and/or mines.
