For over a year, New York City has seen a big rise in pickpocketing, mostly done by organized migrant pickpocketing crews. This problem has gotten so bad that the NYPD has set up a special unit to handle it.
Since many migrant shelters were set up in Midtown, pickpocketing has skyrocketed. There are now signs in Times Square warning people about pickpockets, which is something new for the city.
A big issue is that many of these pickpockets don't seem to care if they get arrested because their cases are often sealed by the courts, making them hard to trace.
