Colorado warns residents not to use cars for a day in ‘Ozone Action Day Alert’

.

Colorado is urging residents not to use their cars for 24 hours in order to guard against poor air quality in the state.

The state’s “Ozone Action Day Alert” went into effect on Sunday at 4 p.m. and will remain in effect until at least 4 p.m. on Monday. It requested that Colorado residents “limit driving gas and diesel-powered vehicles” to reduce their effect on air quality.

“Hot and sunny weather may allow ozone concentrations to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category on Sunday and Monday,” the alert said.

Ground-level ozone occurs when emissions from cars, power plants, and other industrial facilities chemically react in sunlight. Heat and sunlight can contribute to increased ozone levels.

The southwestern and western portions of the Denver metropolitan area were expected to have the highest ozone concentrations, according to the alert. Sunday’s air quality index for the area was deemed “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

They can be real.

Mass has Ozone Alert (formerly smog) days occasionally.  Usually happens during sunny, hot stretches with little to no wind.

We have faw fewer than we used to in the 1970s and 1980s.

"One" day to flatten the curve?
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

No curve to flatten.

Warn those with respiratory issues and attempt to keep off EPA's air quality $h!t-list.

If Colorado can't maintain "acceptable" air quality stats, the EPA will impose expensive remediations upon state and municipalities in Colorado.

The EPA doesn't just terrorize private industry, they also wreak havoc on state and municipal governments.

My water district will be increasing rates to implement EPA-manadated water quality mitigations.  The water quality hasn't changed, but the EPA strandards and requirements have changed.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

We get that in the winter... Everybody burns wood up in here, and if there is an inversion, the smoke will lay on the valley floor, and the air gets thick.

No where near what a forest fire will do though.
Since they shut off the loggers, just about every august we'll fill so thick with smoke that you can't see... which is more pollution than man could ever dream of.

We get that here, in  ND, when you can smell the smoke and the sun is red (not orange, but red) at midday. Whether it is from western MT or OR or WA or part of Canada, it gets so thick visibility drops to 1/4 mile or less.

There's a whole dang mountain right behind my place... Maybe a couple hundred yards out my back door. It got so bad last time, I couldn't see that mountain for several weeks.

Yeah. Here visibility was measured in yards, when ordinarily, it was line of sight to the horizon.  There were days where you could only see 1/4 mile or less.
