esterday, I went out of my way to help a driver, I did not know who, with a burned out brake light. I followed him to his parking spot in the small center where we have coffee and chat after tennis.
I showed him my sign BRAKE LIGHT OUT and he screamed at me, "SO WHAT! " Then he proceeded to do a double middle fingers up and scream "F*** You, f*** you!"
He recognized me as the one who said to him, "This guy never shuts up" at our morning coffee as he went on and on and on about being the greatest bricklayer on earth, every time he came around. I didn't know it was him but would gladly have helped him if I had known.
For thirty years I have shown drivers everywhere signs I first printed on legal yellow paper before tiring of rewriting it every day. Since then I printed up nice signs on 90 pound card stock and flash those.
Almost without fail I get a thumbs up.
If possible, I then show them the reverse side, and always get laughter and another thumbs up! In California!
His was the most hateful, most pathetic reaction I have ever seen in thirty years, with thousands of notifications each year!
What a poor, sad, person. I feel sorry for whoever is around him. It won't be me. I think he only has one shirt as that's all we ever see him in, an old, tie-dyed tee shirt.
P.S. The middle brake light, usually inside the rear window, is the most frequently one to be out. This is likely because many people don't even know it is there, after watching hundreds of thousands of cars in front of them light theirs up!
