Army Moves Forward With Future Tactical UAS Platform

DENVER — The Army’s Future Tactical Uncrewed Aircraft System rapid prototyping program is one step closer to providing the service with what officials called a “transformational capability.”

The program completed Option 2 and awarded Options 3 and 4 to Griffon Aerospace and Textron Systems, the service announced during the Army Aviation Mission Solutions Summit.

The unmanned aircraft is part of the Army’s future vertical lift modernization effort and will provide reconnaissance and surveillance operations that collect, develop and report actionable intelligence. The platform will employ vertical takeoff and landing capabilities for runway independence, on-the-move command and control and a modular open systems approach to allow for rapid technology insertion.

Col. Danielle Medaglia, project manager for uncrewed aircraft systems, called the program’s modular open systems approach “incredible,” allowing new technology as it is brought on board to get “out to the soldiers as quickly as possible.”
