Dutch researchers shocked: supercomputer calculates ice age for Europe
By Rebecca Röhrich.
A new study shows significant changes in the Gulf Stream, which has a huge impact on our climate. Europe may be on its way to a new ice age – and very soon.
It is no news that serious changes are currently taking place in the Atlantic. One reason for this is that the ice at the North Pole is melting as a result of rising temperatures due to global warming and flowing into the Atlantic Ocean as fresh water. This throws Europe's 'hot water boiler', the North Atlantic Current, out of balance. If this happens, temperatures in Europe would drop.
A so-called supercomputer of Dutch researchers has now calculated that this could happen much faster than previously assumed. Previous calculations assumed a tipping point around 2050. The latest calculations assume a much earlier tipping point, namely a decisive change in our climate conditions in Europe in less than two years, in 2025. The temperature could then drop by 30 degrees.
