Seven Republicans Declare Candidacy for Speaker

Bradley Jaye 22 Oct 2023

Seven Republicans have declared their candidacy for Speaker as Republicans struggle to find a path to claim the gavel ahead of a nomination deadline set for noon on Sunday.

House Republicans ended the candidacy of their nominee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) Friday by secret ballot by a vote of 112-88.

The conference sent its members home for the weekend after setting a deadline of Sunday at noon ET for candidates to declare.

Republicans will reassemble Monday night for a candidate forum with a vote expected Tuesday.

Here are the candidates who have declared so far, listed in alphabetical order.

If whomever ends up with a majority out of this group can't get approved by Republicans, then make a deal with Dems.

Changing the time limit on discharge petitions from 30 days to 5 should do it if necessary.

To support for Speaker whomever gets a majority.  Electing a Speaker is required by the Constitution.  In exchange, give them a shortened time for  discharge petitions to come to the floor.

That's the only option if the House now has various small groups willing to sink any GOP Speaker but their own preferred candidate.

Surrender is not an option.

Well, if there are too many factions within the GOP to elect a Speaker, than one of two things will happen:

1)  The GOP majority makes a deal with Democrats to keep a GOP Speaker, with a few concessions, or;

2) A few members of the GOP who don't want things shutdown will simply support Hakeem Jeffries, in which case he sets the rules.

You can pretend neither of those will happen and we'll just not have a Speaker until 2025, but that's not realistic.  Someone is going to cave.  And if that's going to happen, 1) is better than 2).  Of course, the preferred route is for the GOP to simply support unanimously whomever has the majority within the caucus, but as we have seen, some are not willing to do that.

Pete Sessions is the best one on that list.  An extensive history of Conservatism.  Most of the remainder only give it lip service while enjoying their perks.
