Congressman Leaves Democratic Socialists Of America For Promoting Pro-Palestinian Rally After Hamas Attack
Story by Molly Bohannon, Forbes Staff •
16h

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) announced Wednesday he was renouncing his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America, after the group’s New York City chapter promoted a rally in Times Square in support of the Palestinian territories one day after militant group Hamas attacked Israel—a rally that has drawn wide condemnation from public officials.

Thanedar said in a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, that the New York City chapter’s promotion of “Sunday’s hate-filled and antisemitic rally … makes it impossible” for him to continue identifying with the group.

The freshman lawmaker said his ideals “have not changed at all” and he intends to keep working toward universal healthcare, strong labor unions and other priorities of the DSA, but that he is ending his association so as to not fan “the flames of hatred.”

The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

It doesn't appear he left the party, though.  The DSA is a big part of the party so his words mean nothing.

Yes, but I still give the guy credit for doing this.  Plenty of other members of that group either agree with its stance, or are too chicken to disavow it publicly.
