New Orleans Museum of Art under fire for hiring white woman as new African art curator

By Patrick Reilly
July 5, 2023

The New Orleans Museum of Art has sparked outrage over its decision to hire a white woman as its new curator of African art — citing her “breadth of experience” in the field — rather than a person of color.

NOMA announced on Instagram last Friday that Amanda M. Maples landed the role as curator of its African art collection, which the museum said is considered among one of the most important in the US.

The appointment raised eyebrows from critics on the social media platform, with many wondering why the museum was unable to find a person of African descent to fill the position.

“No offense at all and congrats to her! She seems to be qualified given the brief history you all provided, but are there no African, black, or poc that can oversee endeavors like this at NOMA? user Sara Joy Carminati commented on the post.

“The efforts to showcase African history become very watered down and dampened when the very person appointed to oversee them isn’t at least a person of color and can by no means relate to the black or African experience.”

:facepalm2:

A black American is not going to have any greater insight into African art than anyone else simply because of their skin color.

Racism has, if anything, become even more ingrained in American society than it ever was prior to the 1960s, all thanks to American liberals.

Do they complain if someone black is given a position relating to European or Asian art?

You would not hear a peep out of the same people protesting against the white woman.
In fact, if you made the same argument about a black person curating European art as they're attempting to make about the white woman and African art, you'd be accused of racism. Everybody knows that.
It's a double standard the kind the left specializes in.

@Kamaji

I KNOW I am going to get hammered for this, but the simple truth is that statement like this highlight the typical shallowness of intellectualism amongst the typical black "intellectuals."

They don't want a white woman there BECAUSE she is a white woman. Doesn't have ONE single damn thing to do with her knowledge or experience.

If blacks can get away with  that, what is wrong with white people saying "no blacks should have positions of authority over white people because "they  just can't relate to the "white people thinking process or ability to deal with new thoughts."

Which was pretty much proven by "President Buckwheat and his "husband wife".
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

Here's exactly where they try to slip one past the goalie:

It's not about black history or art - it's about African history or art.  It's like arguing that someone whose ancestors came from Poland three hundred years ago would somehow be inherently more knowledgeable about Polish art.

Exactly.
It would interesting to know exactly how many black people are experts on African art.
I don't care what color or ethnicity the expert expounding on European art to me is. They either know their business, or they don't.
I mean who actually would care if you went to some art exhibit featuring European art, and the person doing the talking was black? Who gives a good gdamn?
