Did Ukraine just win the war?
30 May 2023|Adam SimpsonRussia–Ukraine war

As Ukraine’s ‘shaping’ activities continue across Russian-occupied Ukraine—and parts of Russian territory—ahead of its much-anticipated counteroffensive, the global political environment is gradually, but significantly, shifting in Ukraine’s favour.

In the week leading up to this month’s G7 summit in Japan, and during the meeting itself, the symbolism and political decision-making surrounding Ukraine demonstrated more unified and unqualified support for President Volodymyr Zelensky, and may represent a turning point in the conflict.

Indeed, it may turn out to be the moment Ukraine won the war.

That has not always been the most likely outcome.

As Russia’s troops withdrew from around Kyiv six weeks after its unjustified but poorly planned invasion of Ukraine in February last year, it looked very much like Russia had lost the war, particularly in relation to its original aims of overrunning Kyiv and installing a Russia-friendly puppet regime.

The Russians and Chi-coms play the long game.  They know a protracted war of attrition will break the will of the West, especially socialist creampuff countries, France and Germany.

China plays the long game; Russia is no longer capable of doing so.  It's adventure in Ukraine was clearly premised on very short-term thinking, and once that failed, they had nothing left but to bloody Ukraine as much as possible to salve their egos.

While Ukraine pushed back the orcs from Kyiv and out of the west/north bank of the Dniepro, including Kherson, and their much expected counter-offensive looks to be poised to kick off, I would not predict the outcome of Russia's invasion.

I will say, however, that I think Ukraine did Eastern EuroLand a huge service in depleting Russia's most experienced military personnel and best front line weapons. It will probably take Putin, if he survives his invasion fiasco, 10 or more years to rebuild the Russian Army and Air Force.
