‘What happened to Donald Trump?’ DeSantis supporting super PAC launches attack ad against former president

A super PAC supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis released a television ad attacking former President Donald Trump, accusing him of spending airtime and money attacking the likely Republican presidential candidate.

“Donald Trump is being attacked by a Democrat prosecutor in New York,” the ad's narrator says. “So why is he spending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida? Trump’s stealing pages from the Biden-Pelosi playbook.”

Mr DeSantis is expected to announce a bid for the White House in 2024, though he has not formally confirmed his candidacy.

The ad focuses in part on Social Security, which Mr DeSantis has previously stated should begin when American workers turn 70, rather than the current age of 65. The Florida governor has since changed his position, arguing the program should not be touched during negotiations, according to The Hill. ..........

.............The ad then asks "what happened to Donald Trump?" suggesting he should be spending his time fighting Democrats, and not lashing out at fellow Republicans like Mr DeSantis.............

Trump has some serious issues going on right now and has reverted back into a bully.  DeSantis is clearly a threat to him.

DeSantis Finds Out Being an ‘bleep’ Has Its Downsides When You’re Running for President

“He’s just a very arrogant guy, very focused on Ron DeSantis,” the governor’s former GOP colleague said this week.

When Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came to Washington this week to try to woo lawmakers ahead of his likely White House run, only a dozen reportedly showed up.

That was no surprise to one of the Florida governor’s former House colleagues.

Former Michigan Rep. Dave Trott reached out to Politico, without prompting, to describe exactly what DeSantis was like in person.

“I sat right next to DeSantis for two years on the Foreign Affairs Committee, and he never said a single word to me,” Trott emailed. “I was new to Congress, and he didn’t introduce himself or even say hello.”

Trott was even blunter in a phone call with the publication.

From the article….

The Florida governor has since changed his position, arguing the program should not be touched during negotiations, according to The Hill.

This is a promise that nobody should be making. You cannot fix our fiscal situation without touching Social Security and Medicare.
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

This is sweet of you @corbe ---- but, the hat tip belongs to DeSantis's former Republican colleagues in Congress.

I'm surprised you're surprised by this.  Ronnie's reputation has always been that of an "arrogant pr#*k".  Just ask his staff.

I don't doubt that DeSantis isn't a warm and fuzzy glad hander with other politicos.  He's a very self-made middle class guy who has achieved what he has by being much smarter than most of the people around him, and far more competent.  Having worked closely with Navy SEALs, who tend to be all business at work and do not suffer fools gladly, he likely adopted those same views.

Considering the quality of most of the career politicians serving in Congress, it's not surprising to me that he's not buddy-buddy with them.  He thinks he's smarter and more.competent than all of them because he probably is.

It's kind of funny reading about the reasons why those particular members of Congress chose to endorse Trump over DeSantis. It's not that DeSantis isn't competent, or doesn't have good ideas. It's generally things like "he didn't say hi to me" or "He didn't ask how my family was doing.". It's eighth grade girls level of maturity.

As a voter who doesn't have a personal connection with any political candidate, and only cares about who gets the job done, those kind of complaints are irrelevant to me.  If anything, they are more a negative comment on those members of Congress than they are on DeSantis.

On the flip side, Trump has always been wildly hot and cold in terms of his relationships with people. If you're one of his buddies, and show the appropriate amount of deference/awe, he'll love you. On the flip side, the second you criticize him about anything, you immediately become his worst enemy and he begins saying horrible things about you.  So, it stands to reason that he's going to have a certain cadre of politicians who very much are in love with him because they haven't yet crossed him. Endorsements from those people don't matter to me as a voter either.

Not just with politicos.  DeSantis just isn't good at retail politics, period --- and it is causing his current cadre of consultants major heartburn.  He is unrelatable and unlikeable.

So what? Being "likable" and "relatable" has zero relevance to how well you actually govern.  Bill Clinton and his "I feel your pain" crap.  Obama and his mushy "hope and change" crap that made so many voters like him.

Sure, personal charisma is a tool that can help you get elected, But it is a tool devoid of an values, principles, or substantive meaning.  It's voting for the guy you like the most, most effective with the gullible who don't bother to think any deeper than that.

Trump's advantage over DeSantis in that regard has been acknowledged from the start.  He's a TV personality who knows how to appeal to people, just like Jerry Springer or Oprah.

So that may be a reason why Trump wins the nomination. But it's not a reason for explaining why he should win the nomination.  Because once you get passed the small state early primaries in which retail politics has a disproportionate impact, the vast majority of voters are never going to meet that person face to face, and so that used car salesman talent has little value.

At that stage, and in the general election, people are going to form their opinions on a candidate based on what that candidate says and does, not on how effectively they can chat them up in a diner.  And we know now that based on what Trump has said and done, there are an awful lot of voters who absolutely cannot stand him, and would not vote for him.under any circumstances.
