Less Than Half Of Republican Voters Would Back Trump In 2024 Primary, Poll Finds

Topline

Support among Republican primary voters for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid has fallen by nine percentage points since August, a new Morning Consult poll finds—while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ popularity has grown—as many Republicans blame Trump and question his presidential run after a “red wave” failed to materialize in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Key Facts

The poll, conducted before Tuesday’s midterms from November 2-7, found 48% of potential Republican primary voters would support Trump if the primaries were held today, versus 26% who’d back DeSantis and 26% who want to vote for someone else.

That’s down from a high of 57% who backed Trump in August, and his support has steadily decreased since, with 52% saying they’d vote for him in September and 49% in October.

DeSantis, widely viewed as Trump’s primary rival for the 2024 nomination, has seen his popularity rise in that time, going up to 26% from 18% in August, 19% in September and 24% in October, while the share who want a different candidate has stayed largely unchanged (except in September, when it increased to 29% before going down again).

Morning Consult found Trump supporters skew slightly younger than DeSantis supporters—with 75% being under age 65 versus 66% of DeSantis backers, and 19% being ages 18-24 versus 15% for DeSantis—and are overall less educated, with 29% who have attended college or graduate school versus 48% who prefer the Florida governor.

Trump also has more female supporters than DeSantis—women made up 54% of his voters while DeSantis’ were evenly split at 50%—and respondents who plan to vote for the ex-president have slightly lower incomes (only 18% make more than $100,000 annually, versus 30% of DeSantis voters).

DeSantis also appears to have an edge with suburban voters, who made up 60% of his support base, while Trump polled higher with rural and urban respondents.

I'm done making excuses for the things Trumps says and does. He lost my respect and any support I had left in the tank for him when he went full retard. Never ever go full retard.

Those of us who tend to vote Republican seem to like to chase shiny objects. The new shiny object is Ron DeSantis. If Ron DeSantis becomes the next president, I hope I’m not disappointed.

Ron DeSantis getting the
nomination would be a better chance of capturing the White House than Donald Trump

That is good news.  Unfortunately, too many states have open primaries and if Biden is running again unchallenged, 'Rats will vote Trump in the GOP primaries in expectation he will perform as badly as the Senate candidates he endorsed did this time.

The GOP should switch to caucuses (ideally open only to people who have been registered Republicans for at least a full year) in states that insist on holding open primaries.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.
