Report: McDonald’s Raises Prices, Closes Stores as Worker Shortage Continues

Jacob Bliss 28 Oct 2021

McDonald’s says they are forced to raise menu prices as worker wages climb, as well as close down some restaurants due to labor shortages and slower service in some locations, according to reports.

The burger giant is raising menu prices in order to sustain the rapidly growing costs of supplies and wages, according to the Wall Street Journal. The report indicated that the company had increased salaries by at least ten percent this year alone.

The report added that the company also has to pay more for paper, food, and other supplies and expected the commodity costs to go up anywhere between 3.5 percent to four percent. Unfortunately, executives said the prices in the U.S. are up roughly six percent from last year, which will trickle down to the consumer.

The WSJ reported:

McDonald’s said that bigger order sizes and higher prices increased its revenue in the U.S., as did its new crispy chicken sandwich and celebrity-endorsed meals. Diners are placing more to-go orders and buying for larger groups than before the pandemic, contributing to higher sales per customer, executives said.

McDonald’s, the world’s biggest burger chain, said that it had fewer Covid-19-related restaurant closures over the past quarter in major markets such as Canada, France and Germany, helping McDonald’s sales in those countries. Still, vaccine health pass requirements in France and quarantine orders in Australia, for example, made operations more challenging, the company said.

In the U.S., roughly 3,000 McDonald’s dining rooms remain closed in areas with high Covid-19 infection rates, or roughly 20% of locations. U.S. sales remain elevated at drive-throughs, online and through delivery, even after reopening a location’s dining room, executives said

Psaki needs to get on the horn to MickeyD's, according to her there is no reason for a corporation to raise prices just because their costs/taxes go up. This is where that steep learning curve comes in for all those no skill workers that demanded higher wages, unfortunately their dragging the rest of along with them.

LOL!  Funny thing, too... they have 4 touch-screen kiosks that are not functioning due to their not wanting to be sanitizing the screen and surfaces after every use due to Covid.

Our local KFC/Taco Bell location locked their lobby doors last year.  Drive-thru only.  Same with Bon-Jon, the Korean chicken-wing joint.

Thanks to capitalism, the big chains are still offering "Two for Six" mix-n-match deals on their big-name sandwiches.
But don't try to tell me the McDonald's quarter pounder is still a higher quality burger.

And for God's sake...MELT THE CHEESE!

There was a time, before '96 that I would have argued about the quarter pounder, that's when we actually served food that was cooked no more than 10 min before selling. Then the major chains, McD, Carls, Jack and BK all went to what they called made to order, which actually meant cooked 20 to 60 min. before and slapped(and I do mean slapped) together when you ordered. That's why the cheese isn't melted, the food is is lukewarm and nothing tastes like it used to how could it after sitting in a steam or warming cabinet all that time? But we have almost a generation and a half raised on fare that is even more mediocre and they think it's normal. Sorry about the rant

There are a couple things McD still gets right the breakfast muffin sandwiches and the Filet but really from my decades with them that's it anymore.

Ate at McD's several weeks ago, and that will be the last time I ever do that again.  The food had spent way too much time in the steamer, was not particularly palatable anyways, and outrageously overpriced.  And this was at a restaurant on the North Shore of LI that, for the longest time, was a pretty decent place overall.
