YouTube Will Remove Videos Questioning Biden Election Victory Even as Legal Challenges Continue

Google-owned video platform YouTube has announced plans to remove any content that questions Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 U.S. presidential election despite the fact that legal challenges involving multiple states continue. YouTube also announced it will be promoting “authoritative news sources,” such as NBC and CBS in video recommendations.

In a recent blog post titled “Supporting the 2020 U.S. election,” Google-owned video-sharing platform YouTube announced plans to remove any content that questions Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 U.S. presidential election or implies fraud impacted the election outcome.

In the blog post, YouTube writes:

Yesterday was the safe harbor deadline for the U.S. Presidential election and enough states have certified their election results to determine a President-elect. Given that, we will start removing any piece of content uploaded today (or anytime after) that misleads people by alleging that widespread fraud or errors changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, in line with our approach towards historical U.S. Presidential elections. For example, we will remove videos claiming that a Presidential candidate won the election due to widespread software glitches or counting errors. We will begin enforcing this policy today, and will ramp up in the weeks to come. As always, news coverage and commentary on these issues can remain on our site if there’s sufficient education, documentary, scientific or artistic context.

YouTube announced Wednesday that the Google-owned video platform would outright remove content critical of the 2020 election results and would only promote videos from corporate media.

It’s clear however that YouTube’s censorship of election reporting only goes one way, implemented for the first time two years after Imaginary Georgia Gov. Stacey Abrams has repeatedly refuted the results of her lost 2018 gubernatorial race as unfair contrary to the evidence. ...

YouTube is instituting a new set of rules that will censor users producing videos that go against the de facto narrative that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election fair and square, the company announced Wednesday. Any videos or livestreams that dispute the election results will not only be removed from the platform, but channels who upload these videos will be hit with community violations that will bar them from the platform.

In an official blog post titled, “Supporting the 2020 U.S. election,” YouTube claims that “Our main goal going into the election season was to make sure we’re connecting people with authoritative information, while also limiting the reach of misinformation and removing harmful content.”

In the post, YouTube boasts at having “terminated over 8,000 channels and thousands of harmful and misleading elections-related videos for violating our existing policies. Over 77% of those removed videos were taken down before they had 100 views.”   ...
