Tunneling floodwater under Houston may be back on the table for the Corps
With ample public feedback, the Army Corps of Engineers is now re-evaluating which projects to push forward to reduce flooding along Buffalo Bayou.
Staff are again examining building a tunnel to carry floodwater under the city to the Houston Ship Channel and excavating dirt from the Addicks and Barker reservoirs — both proposals nixed in a report released last month.
Corps engineers in their Buffalo Bayou and Tributaries Resiliency Study interim report described the former as too costly and the latter as not effective enough. But Colonel Timothy Vail said they’ve since received enough feedback to warrant a second look.
Some 1,500 comments from the public had been submitted by Nov. 15 — providing meaningful and compelling input, Vail said that evening in a telephone town hall hosted by U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, a Houston Democrat. The formal comment period ended Friday.
