A suspect was arrested during a large-scale police operation at a Vienna synagogue following gunfire Monday, police in the Austrian capital said.

The head of Vienna's Jewish community, Oskar Deutsch, said on Twitter that it is unclear whether the synagogue or adjoining offices were the targets of the attack since they were closed at the time.

A police officer is reported to have been shot and seriously injured. “There are several injured persons,” police tweeted. “We are on site with all available forces. Please avoid all public squares in the city.” ...      More

 Law enforcement in Vienna, Austria have launched what they called a “major police operation,” following multiple exchanges of gunshots near the city’s main synagogue located in the Old Town area. Several people have been injured.

According to local reporters citing the interior ministry, one person has been killed in the incident.

Footage shared on social media purportedly shows the moment several bursts of shooting can be heard breaking out, as people on the street rush to seek shelter. ...

A suspected assailant, who is believed to be armed, is still on the run, according to local media. Austria’s Interior Ministry has asked Vienna residents to stay at home and away from windows.

At least one person is dead and several others, including a police officer are injured after one or more attackers opened fire near a synagogue in Vienna, Austria.

As reported by Express.co.uk,

    Footage posted on social media showed people scrambling for cover as shots can be heard in the background. A man can be heard shouting while sirens go off while a pedestrian can be seen cowering behind a bike rack. Flashing lights from what appear to be police vehicles can also be seen in the video. Austria's interior ministry said one person has died and several others, including a police officer, are injured.

According to The Sun, one attacker is believed to be dead:

    The attacker is said to have blown himself up with a suicide belt, Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reports.

    ...One of the alleged attackers has been arrested, according to the Austrian authorities.

    However, it is believed that others could now be on the run.

VIENNA (AP) — At least one Islamic extremist — a 20-year-old armed with an automatic rifle and a fake explosive vest — rampaged through a crowded Vienna nightlife district hours ahead of a coronavirus lockdown, leaving four people dead before being killed by police, Austrian authorities said Tuesday.

The suspect in Monday night’s attack was identified as a young Austrian-North Macedonian dual citizen with a previous terror conviction for attempting to join the Islamic State extremist group in Syria.

Unverified video showed the suspect, dressed in white coveralls, firing off bursts apparently at random as he ran down the Austrian capital’s cobblestone streets. ...

Two men and two women died from their injuries in the attack, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. He said a police officer who tried to get in the way of the attacker was shot and wounded, and another 14 people were hurt.

Vienna’s hospital service said seven people were in life-threatening condition Tuesday after the attack, APA reported. ...

The attacker, identified as Kujtim Fejzulai, was sentenced to 22 months in prison in April 2019 because he had tried to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group. He was granted early release in December under juvenile law. ...
