Gov. Phil Murphy will appear virtually Thursday with members of a campaign coalition seeking to end marijuana prohibition and encourage voters to say yes to a ballot question that would legalize weed for those over 21.

NJ CAN 2020, a statewide coalition of activists, doctors, lawyers and cannabis business interests, will host the virtual forum at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The lineup also features state Sen. Nick Scutari, D-Union, who sponsored previous legislation that would have legalized marijuana for those over the age of 21.

Murphy campaigned on the promise of legalizing marijuana, and the state Legislature made several attempts to pass a bill that would establish such an industry. But the state Senate fell short of the necessary votes, leading lawmakers to drop the effort last year and punt the issue to the ballot.

Yes, Virginia, legalization of marijuana is on the ballot this year.

Quote

New Jersey Public Question 1, the Marijuana Legalization Amendment, is on the ballot in New Jersey as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on November 3, 2020.

A "yes" vote supports this constitutional amendment to legalize the possession and use of marijuana for persons age 21 and older and legalize the cultivation, processing, and sale of retail marijuana.

A "no" vote opposes this constitutional amendment to legalize the possession and use of marijuana and the cultivation, processing, and sale of retail marijuana in New Jersey.
