Most air conditioning systems don't protect against the coronavirus. In some cases, they can actually facilitate spread

Adrianna Rodriguez, USA TODAY   |   15 JUL 2020

Engineers and ventilation experts said this may be in part because residents escape the heat by retreating indoors where heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems could exacerbate airborne transmission with unplanned air currents.

“The main way (air conditioning) can contribute to spreading coronavirus is by creating strong air currents that can move the droplets … and contribute to increase risk,” said William Bahnfleth, chair of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ Epidemic Task Force (ASHRAE) and professor at Penn State University.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

We Must turn off/ban 'air conditioning' until the virus is defeated.

I'm no scientist, but I say this is BS.  Wouldn't be at all surprised if the CDC recommends, and the powers in state and local governments order restaurants, bars and other public places to turn off their air conditioning.  Great way to drive away even more customers and put these places out of business.

But banning air conditioning will probably make the enviro-whackos happy.  If they had it their way, we would get rid of furnace heat too.  Bad for the environment, ya know.

BTW, I just turned my air on.  75 degrees outside and it's already stifling.  Gonna be 90 or more degrees here today.

Well, with all that global warming, according to the scientists in SoCal, we won't need it.

You what this makes me think of?  :pondering: One hell of a business opportunity retrofitting AC systems with HEPA filters.

All it takes is one UV light in the return air. Less than $100.00

What?  And show that Trump was right?  Never gonna happen.  Better to let thousands of NY appartment dwellers die than let that happen.

That may cut it in a residence, but commercially?

One for each zone. Properly sized.

I don't know why UV wouldn't work well in a commercial building. The UV lights go into the return air duct. https://www.americanultraviolet.com/hvac-air-cleaner.cfml

So are guys saying that it's not a great business opportunity if you substitute UV lights for HEPA filters cause I think your missing the main point over method.

@GtHawk

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure almost all hospitals and commercial buildings adopted the UV light thing years ago.

Single family residences, not so much.

Granted it's been over a decade since I was working on and installing equipment in labs and the last major work was in the Scripps cancer research building but I can't say I saw or dealt with any UV systems in AC or air supplies, just HEPA and that included AIDS research labs we worked on. Even five years is a tremendous amount of time for some tech  :pondering: so I freely admit to being a

The will probably mandate businesses to install UV on their air conditioning systems.

hmmm ... just seems like this is leading to everybody in some way having to comply with going green.

Here's what I know @GtHawk. Soon after this outbreak began It ocured to me that the air handling systems in hospitals and clinics would be perfect way to distribute things like this throughout buildings so I asked about it on twitter. I got many responses and several from people who are professionals in the field.  I'm just reporting what they passed on to me.

I don't know, but it seems to me that in places like research labs both HEPA and UV would/could be employed. I'm told that many older hospitals had to have the UV systems installed because they were not originally there.

I think you'd want both. HEPA to take the big crud out of the air first to keep it from accumulating on the  UV lights and reducing their efficacy.
