Plan to remove capsized ship in huge chunks might be in jeopardy

Navy Times by Russ Bynum 2/22/2020

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A federal judge on Friday ordered attorneys for the U.S. Coast Guard and a maritime salvage company to answer detailed questions about plans to remove an overturned cargo ship on the Georgia coast by sawing it into eight enormous chunks.

The salvage firm Donjon-SMIT filed suit Feb. 13 asking the judge to halt removal of the South Korean car carrier ship Golden Ray, which capsized off St. Simons Island on Sept. 8 shortly after leaving the nearby Port of Brunswick with 4,200 automobiles in its cargo decks.

The multi-agency command overseeing the wreck removal hopes to start cutting the ship into sections in May. But Donjon-SMIT says the Coast Guard violated the federal Oil Pollution Act when it allowed the ship's owner to drop the company in favor of a rival salvage firm willing to remove the vessel in larger pieces.

Donjon-SMIT’s complaint says that plan threatens an “environmental disaster.”

Government attorneys representing the Coast Guard responded Friday that halting salvage efforts already underway "would further delay of the removal of the Golden Ray and increase the risk of harm to the environment."

Pump the fuel oil out of it and just leave it there...

There are 4,200 automobiles on board.  Each one has oil and fuel in it.

Environmental midgets who can't even manage their own lives think they know what is best for everyone else. They only make things harder for everyone else an' exacerbate the problem.

Not really "environmentalists" in this case...it is the rejected salvage company trying to get some pay-back for losing the salvage contract.

Sounds to me like sour grapes by the salvage company that got dropped.

So let me get this straight, this thing has been in the water upside down for 5 1/2 months, leaking God knows what in God knows whatever quantity, and they still have done NOTHING. Coming to a health care plan near you if the Dimmies win.

A bit more than nothing.

...One step that helped: Large rocks were dumped around the ship to keep it from shifting during incoming and outgoing tides. The rate of sinking into the sand has been slowed considerably by the rocks, Baer said.

The Brunswick newspaper reports that divers have been going inside the capsized vessel to remove oil and other possible contaminants that could pollute area waterways.

Baer estimated about 29 miles (47 kilometers) of coastline have been impacted from oil and fuel that has leaked from the ship....

Salvage workers continue to lighter the vessel, and they have removed over 136,000 gallons of fuel as of Wednesday. The source of the oil discharge that occurred on Monday afternoon has been located and secured....

...Skimming vessels are continuing to recover oil from the water while response teams continue to canvass the shoreline to mitigate impacted areas. There are currently 315 response personnel out in the field helping to mitigate and report on environmental impacts. 14,700 feet of containment boom has been deployed to protect sensitive areas and booming strategies continue to be optimized based on the evolving response efforts and changing environmental conditions. ...
