Here’s the bottom line: What will it take to get to 20?

That’s the number of Republican senators who would need to join with 47 Democrats to reach the 67 votes to convict and remove President Trump.

But first, what will it take to get to four?


That’s the number of Republican senators who would need to join with the Democrats to get witnesses and documents introduced at Trump’s impeachment trial.

Four Republican votes is a low bar to avoid a sham trial. But Trump has defined membership in the GOP as a matter of loyalty to him above all.

If they want witnesses, fine.  But then those defending Trump have to have the same right to call witnesses even if proponents of impeachment don't believe them to be relevant.

The Rats are going to have a hard time resisting calling Trump's defense witnesses, if the Rats are allowed theirs.  It will be too bad for the Rats if they are stupid enough to open that door.
