Google has stopped the rollout of the latest version of its Chrome browser on Android devices after discovering it was deleting data on some third-party apps.

Version 79 of Chrome for Android had already been distributed to 50 percent of devices when the issue was discovered Friday, according to 9to5Google. That means potentially millions of users could be affected by the bug, which is not expected to be patched for five to seven days.

The issue involves WebView, a component of Chrome that serves as the web browser for some third-party apps. Some developers create programs for Android devices that are wrappers for websites and store data on the device, rather than online. Those are the kinds of apps most susceptible to the flaw.
