AL Wild Card Game: Live Thread

A Yandy Diaz solo homer in the first . . . an Avisail Garcia two-run shot in the second . . . the A's leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first . . .

It's 3-0, Rays, going to the top of the third . . .

Second verse, same as the first: Yandy Diaz hits one the other way to right and it leaves the yard again. 4-0 Rays, top of the third, and the A's are going to the bullpen early, Yusmeiro Petit coming in to relieve Sean Manaea . . .

That cavernous Oakland foul territory pays off for the A's in the bottom of the third: Marcus Semien reaches on a third baseman's throwing error and is able to take two extra bases on the play, then comes home on a sacrifice fly. The A's on the board but the Rays still lead it, 4-1 . . .

The Rays go quietly in order in the top of the fourth still leading, 4-1 . . .

The story so far for the A's is squandered opportunity. They strand two and it's still 4-1 Rays after four . . .

Charlie Morton with command issues and a few too many deep counts still gets through the fifth inning with only one run against him.

5-1 Rays, after five . . .

A's late-season rookie reliever Jesus Luzardo gets the Rays in order including two strikeouts . . . still 5-1 Rays, middle of the sixth.

The Rays go to the bullpen and the A's waste another one-out baserunner . . . 5-1 Rays after six . . .

The Rays threaten to break the game farther open with first and second and two out but don't get there. Still 5-1 Rays, middle seventh . . .

Both bullpens kept each other quiet and the A's keep squandering opportunities.

5-1 Rays going to the bottom of the ninth . . .

Two strikeouts sandwiching a ground out in the bottom of the ninth and the Rays win it, 5-1, and they'll meet the Astros in a division series . . . the first time the Rays have seen the postseason since 2013 . . .
