Fake News CNN Claims Trump Ended Rule to Keep Guns from ‘Mentally Ill’

This morning CNN attempted to paint President Donald Trump as culpable for the two tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio this weekend.

Anchors Poppy Harlow and John Avlon claimed on-air that the president eliminated a proposed Obama-era regulation that would keep firearms out of the hands of the “mentally ill” according to TDW.

DC Examiner’s John Caruso tweeted: “My God, [Poppy Harlow] just repeated the lie that the Trump administration ‘rolled back’ Obama administration rules that kept guns out of the hands of the ‘mentally ill,'” Caruso posted in a series of tweets on Monday. “This is such poor journalism on her part. The regulation had nothing to do with ‘mental illness’ and everything to do with the lack of due process. The Obama era rules designated anyone who needed a representative payee through the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs ‘mentally unfit.’ If a person met that criteria, their name was entered into the NICS database.”

This talking point wasn’t accurate two years ago and it’s still not accurate today.

Also, IIRC, this regulation had not gone into effect. It was promulgated between the 11/2016 election and Trump's inauguration. Trump prevented it from going into effect. It would have violated the 2nd and 4th Amendment rights of a very small number of people. But it's become a myth among Progs. Just like the, "It's easier to buy a gun in America than it is to buy ______," family of stupid memes.
